FIAS Geoscience Seminar Series

FIAS Geoscience Seminar 17.08.22

Veranstaltungsort: online

The first seminar is scheduled on 17 August 2022 at 16:00 CEST with the follow up in every alternate wednesday. The first speaker is Prof. Dr. F Alejandro Nava from 'Centro de Investigación Científica y de Educación Superior de Ensenada, Ensenada, B.C., Mexico'

The Topic will be:

'Use of apparent velocities for identification and quantification of seismicity clusters precursory to large earthquakes.'

Abstract:

Localized bursts of seismic activity, known as seismicity clusters, indicative of stress concentrations, are a feature of seismicity before the occurrence of large earthquakes, so that it is important to be able to identify and quantify them because they can be an important precursory feature valuable to short-term forecasting. Identification of these clusters is not an easy task, particularly when they are small, and usually requires a priory assumptions about the parameters characterizing them.

We propose a method to identify both large and small clusters occurring in the background seismicity through analysis of apparent velocities, because clusters, and particularly pairs of them, have a particular signature as peaks in apparent velocity histograms, and concentrations in the apparent velocity matrix, corresponding to these peaks, allows identification in time and space of the seismicity concentrations.

We present results of application of the apparent velocity method to seismicity occurring before the Landers 1992   earthquake.
