FIAS Forum: How Computers Model Life
Digital Twins as a Key to Understanding Biology

Venue: FIAS Hörsaal
FIAS Fellows Sebastian Thallmair and Roberto Covino will present recent advances in molecular modeling and the new opportunities it opens up for studying cellular and health-related processes.
Whether the human body recognizes a harmful bacterium and triggers a defense reaction depends on a complex interplay of many factors. Experiments allow researchers to test individual processes in simplified systems or to study the complex whole. Yet it is often impossible to control all relevant influences at the same time.
Today, computers make it possible to investigate biological processes at molecular resolution—often in combination with artificial intelligence. This computer-based replica is known as a “digital twin.” Such modeling has reached a level of complexity and predictive accuracy that enables scientists to explore intricate biological systems in great detail. For instance, simulations now provide important insights into the molecular mechanisms of viral infections.
The lecture will offer an overview of current research in molecular modeling. FIAS Fellows Sebastian Thallmair and Roberto Covino will highlight both the opportunities and the challenges of investigating cellular and health-related processes.
Please note: The lecture will be held in German.

About the FIAS Forum:
The FIAS Forum takes up current topics from the natural sciences and public debate four times a year—scientifically rigorous yet accessible. It provides opportunities for stimulating discussions on pressing challenges in scientific research and their impact on society.
After the lecture, you are invited to continue the conversation with the speakers and other FIAS scientists at a small reception.
