In the next few years, the new international accelerator centre FAIR will be built at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH, one of the largest research projects worldwide. At FAIR, an unprecedented variety of experiments will be possible, allowing physicists from all over the world to gain new insights into the structure of matter and the development of the universe, from the Big Bang to the present day.

The Helmholtz International Center for FAIR (HIC for FAIR) is a research association of Hessian universities and research institutes. The Goethe University Frankfurt, the TU Darmstadt, the Justus-Liebig University of Giessen, the FIAS and the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH have joined forces with the Helmholtz Association to form a think tank for interdisciplinary theoretical and experimental research at the future FAIR facility.

Strategic goals:

  • To strengthen the focus on FAIR research at Hessian universities.
  • To create optimal conditions for research in the field of "strongly interacting matter" (QCD)
  • To develop modern technologies in the fields of particle accelerators, high-speed pattern recognition, high-performance computing and data analysis.
